For students who are studying ASL and foreign languages at Temple, we offer a variety of services designed to help them develop proficiency and fluency in the languages. These offerings change somewhat from semester to semester, based on staff availability. We regularly offer support for students of Arabic, ASL (American Sign Language), Chinese (Mandarin), French, German, Korean, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. We also have Presentation Support and Reading Comprehension available for certain languages. See the program pages for additional information.

One-on-One Conversation Practice and Language Tutoring: ASL and Foreign Languages

Meet one-on-one with an advanced speaker of your target language to practice speaking and listening; to improve reading comprehension; to review course materials or activities; to build vocabulary; to develop grammar skills; and to prepare for oral exams and presentations.

Open to Temple students in 1000-4000+ level courses (specific availability depends on the language), graduate students, as well as students who are between coursework, preparing for study abroad or an internship, or who just want more practice. Students are not required to be enrolled in language courses to schedule Conversation Partner sessions and participate in language tables. However, some basic knowledge of the target foreign language is required.

Writing Tutoring: French, German, Hindi, Portuguese, and Spanish

The Spanish writing tutoring service provides one-on-one support for Temple students who are working on assignments for Spanish courses, as well as cover letters, resumes, scholarship essays, creative writing, and any other texts students are working on in Spanish.

Make an appointment for 1-on-1 conversation practice, language tutoring, and writing tutoring in advance

• Log-in to our appointment system.
• Use the "Show All 'Appointment Focus' Options" drop-down menu to find your target language, and then select an available time slot. Conversation partners are listed under “Language Learning” in the drop-down menu, while writing tutors are listed under "Writing Tutoring."
  • For example, you will see languages listed as follows: "Language Learning - Spanish - 1000 level - Beginner," "Language Learning - Korean," and so on.
  • For writing tutoring in languages other than English, you will see options such as "Writing Tutoring - Spanish."
• Appointments can be scheduled up to 8 days ahead of time.
• We offer two appointment types: 2-block appointments (45-50 mins) and 1-block appointments (20-25 mins). In general, we recommend 2-block appointments when possible, but you can choose. All appointments must be booked in our appointment system at least 20 minutes in advance.
