Stephen is a first-generation collegian who completed a Bachelor’s in English, creative writing, and world literature at James Madison University in Virginia; a Master’s in fiction writing at Johns Hopkins University; and a PhD in English at Temple in 2020. Since 2011, he has worked with students at almost every grade level—from teaching a full-time kindergarten class in South Korea to facilitating workshops for university writing instructors. At Temple, he has frequently taught courses on writing, literature, and American studies. He began his work at the Student Success Center as a writing tutor in 2018. In his professional practice, he has always been committed to economic accessibility and fairness, and he is proud of Temple’s long tradition as a leader in promoting these values.

Stephen’s interests encompass history, narratology, film, cultural studies, media and communication, and animal studies. In his free time, he enjoys hiking, attending live theater, singing karaoke, talking about movies, collecting strange art from thrift stores, and improvising elaborate backstories with his husband about the many accomplishments of their two cats.
